He had been convicted in connection with the fatal shooting of Sonya Massey, a 36-year-old unarmed Black woman, during a July 6, 2024, encounter at her home in Woodside Township near Springfield, Illinois. Grayson, then a deputy with the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office, was responding to a 911 call about a possible prowler when the confrontation escalated after the deputies entered the house and asked for identification.
He was fired after the shooting, charged with three counts of first-degree murder, and later found guilty of second-degree murder following a trial that ended in October 2025. In January 2026, he received the maximum 20-year prison sentence before dying in prison months later.
