Sir Edwin Jowitt, the British High Court judge known for presiding over notable criminal trials, died on June 22, 2026, at the age of 96.
Born in Ripley, Derbyshire, on October 1, 1929, he studied at the London School of Economics, where he earned an LL.B., before being called to the bar as a member of Middle Temple in 1951. Jowitt was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1969 and later served as a recorder of the Crown Court from 1972 to 1980.
He went on to become a circuit judge from 1980 to 1987 and then Senior Circuit Judge and honorary recorder of Birmingham. Among the cases associated with his judicial career was the trial of the murderers of Ross Parker, and he later chaired the Robert Hamill Inquiry.
