Smokler started Scary Mommy as a personal blog in March 2008 in Baltimore, Maryland, and built it into a widely read parenting site covering motherhood, current events and pop culture. She published the book Confessions of a Scary Mommy in April 2012, which became an instant bestseller, and later wrote Scary Mommy’s Guide to Surviving the Holidays.
In 2013, she also founded Scary Mommy Nation, a nonprofit that raised money for families unable to afford a Thanksgiving dinner. Smokler remained with the site after its 2015 sale to Some Spider Studios, serving as chief content officer for three years before leaving in 2018.
