Born Richard Wesley Manville in Des Moines, Iowa, he pitched in 12 major league games over parts of two seasons, appearing in relief for the 1950 Boston Braves and the 1952 Chicago Cubs. Before his professional career, Manville attended Yale University, served in the United States Navy during World War II, and later studied at Harvard University.
He also lettered in basketball, baseball, ice hockey and soccer.
