Sir Anthony Kenny, the British philosopher known for work in the philosophy of mind, ancient and scholastic philosophy, the philosophy of religion and Wittgenstein studies, died on August 3, 2026, aged 95.
Born Anthony John Patrick Kenny in Liverpool on March 16, 1931, he trained for the priesthood at the Venerable English College in Rome and was ordained in 1955. Kenny later became a leading figure in analytic Thomism, working with Peter Geach to present the thought of St.
Thomas Aquinas in the language of analytic philosophy. He also served as an executor of Wittgenstein’s literary estate, was a former president of the British Academy and the Royal Institute of Philosophy, and held academic posts at universities including Cornell, Chicago, Stanford, Michigan, Columbia, Washington University in St. Louis and the University of London. He was made a Knight Bachelor and was a fellow of the British Academy.
