Born Maria Amélia de Almeida Teles in Contagem, Minas Gerais, she became known for her work as a journalist, writer and human rights activist. A militant of the Communist Party of Brazil (PCdoB) against the military dictatorship, she was arrested and tortured by DOI-CODI, and later emerged as one of the leading voices denouncing abuses committed during the regime.
She also carried out longstanding feminist activism, serving with organizations in São Paulo and taking part in efforts focused on legal support, memory and truth around political repression.
