Alton Sutnick American medical researcher and educator dead at age 97

Alton Sutnick, an American medical researcher and educator, died on March 19, 2026.

Sutnick was also an administrator and the author of more than 200 scholarly publications. He received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania in 1950 and a medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1954.

In 1961, he established a laboratory at Temple University School of Medicine for the study of pulmonary surfactant and was the first medical researcher to apply pulmonary surfactant physiological observations to adult human lung disease, including pneumonia, lung cancer and pulmonary embolism.

Alton Ivan Sutnick (July 6, 1928 – March 20, 2026) was an American medical researcher, educator and administrator. He was the author of over 200 scholarly publications.
