Born William Montague Charles Gummow in Sydney on October 9, 1942, he went on to study at the University of Sydney, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts and later a Master of Laws, both with first-class honours. He attended Sydney Grammar School and, after his time on the nation’s highest court, was appointed in 2013 as a non-permanent judge of the Court of Final Appeal of Hong Kong from other common law jurisdictions.
