Barry Rushworth, an Australian professional rugby league footballer who played as a centre for Parramatta and represented Australia and New South Wales, died October 29, 2026, aged 85.
Born in Lithgow, New South Wales, he came through the town’s junior rugby league ranks before being selected for New South Wales in 1963. In 1964, he was chosen for Australia’s tour of France and Europe.
Though he played only once on the tour, Rushworth scored a try in an 18-6 victory over France at the Parc des Princes. On returning to Australia, he joined Parramatta, where he spent his entire playing career across the 1960s and 1970s. He made his final appearance for New South Wales in 1964, scoring in a 31-5 win over Queensland. Parramatta qualified for the finals in 1965, but its campaign ended in the first week with a defeat by Souths. In the years that followed, the club spent much of its time in the middle and lower reaches of the competition, eventually finishing last in 1970. Rushworth’s career thus included a long spell with one club as well as representative appearances for his state and country.
