
Vuokko Nurmesniemi, the Finnish textile designer known for her work at Marimekko, died on April 19, 2026, at the age of 96.
Born Vuokko Hillevi Lilian Eskolin in Helsinki on February 12, 1930, she studied ceramics at the Institute of Industrial Arts in Helsinki before designing glassware and ceramics for Arabia and Nuutajärvi. She joined Marimekko in 1953 and helped shape its printed fabrics in the 1950s, working alongside Maija Isola.
Her signature red-and-white striped Jokapoika shirt, introduced in 1956, became one of her best-known designs.
