Terry Denton, the Australian author and illustrator best known for his work on the Treehouse books, died on September 21, 2026, aged 76.
He wrote and illustrated more than 30 of his own books and also illustrated many works by other Australian writers. Among his best-known titles were The 13-Storey Treehouse and The Cat on the Mat Is Flat, while his own Gasp!
series was adapted into an animated television series that aired on Nine Network and ABC3. Denton also helped shape the look and storytelling of the children’s television series Lift Off, and his first major picture story book, Felix and Alexander, won the Children’s Book Council of Australia Picture Book of the Year award in 1986.
