Josef Kalbáč, a Czech agronomist and politician who served as a senator, died on September 21, 2026, aged 86.
Born in Třebohostice on February 17, 1940, he spent much of his career in agriculture and studied agronomy by distance learning at an agricultural university. A member of the Christian Democratic Union since 1968, he later worked in local government and served as head of the district office in Strakonice before winning election to the Senate in 2003 for the Strakonice district.
He held that seat until 2008 and was among the chamber’s most prominent critics of the Lisbon Treaty. Kalbáč also served as an adviser to President Václav Klaus and backed Klaus in the 2008 presidential election.
