Born Tarapatie Oedayraj Singh Varma on August 29, 1948, in Springlands, Corriverton, then in British Guiana, she later moved to Amsterdam in the Netherlands after studying teaching and law in Suriname, though she did not graduate. In Dutch politics, she was active in the Communist Party of the Netherlands before serving in the House of Representatives from 1994 to 2001.
