Serge Losique, the Canadian writer, festival organizer and academic best known as the founder of the Montreal World Film Festival, died on September 8, 2026, aged 94.
Born in Yugoslavia on November 1, 1931, he studied literature in France at the University of Toulouse and the Sorbonne before moving to Canada in 1957. He went on to teach at Collège de Montréal and Sir George Williams University, later part of Concordia University, where he directed the French department and created the Conservatory of Cinematographic Art in 1968.
Losique was also a screenwriter and university teacher, and he was the father of Anne-Marie Losique.
