Summit, the American research scientist who founded Dialog Information Services and was called a father of modern online search, died on June 7, 2026. Born Roger Kent Summit on October 14, 1930, in Detroit, Michigan, he grew up in Dearborn and later earned a doctorate in management science, a master’s in business administration and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Stanford University.
While a doctoral candidate, he took a summer job at Lockheed Missiles and Space Co. to improve information retrieval methods, and by the early 1960s he was working there as a designer and project manager. His work led to Dialog, an online search system that Lockheed spun off in the 1970s, becoming a major tool for companies, law firms and government users.
