Born in South Africa on September 30, 1931, he trained as an architect at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg before studying at Cambridge University under Nikolaus Pevsner, where he later earned a PhD in 1958 for work on Eugène Viollet-le-Duc and the rational gothic tradition. Middleton became known as a leading authority on 18th-century French architecture and architectural theory, contributed to the rediscovery of the structural ideas behind Gothic architecture in 17th-century France, and served as editor of Architectural Design and head of general studies at the Architectural Association in London before moving to New York in 1987.
