Robert D.
Garton, an American politician and member of the Indiana House of Representatives from 1970 to 2006, died on May 9, 2026, at age 92. A Republican, he served in the Indiana Senate from 1970 to 2006 and was president pro tempore of the Indiana Senate.
Garton was born on Aug. 18, 1933, in Chariton, Iowa. He also served in the United States Marine Corps from 1955 to 1957, reaching the rank of first lieutenant, and was a member of the Indiana Civil Rights Commission from 1969 to 1970.
