Born October 27, 1939, in Rocky Point, North Carolina, he became best known for winning the inaugural Talladega 500 in 1969, a race marked by a boycott of many of the sport’s top stars over tire-wear concerns at the high-speed track. Brickhouse’s NASCAR career spanned 39 races and ended with one victory, four top-five finishes and 13 top-ten results.
He ran his final race in 1982 and later attempted a comeback in 1995 at Rockingham, driving for former driver Dick Skillen, but crashed his No. 14 Chevrolet in qualifying. For many years, he also held the Guinness World Record for the fastest time on a closed circuit.
