
Peter Neumeyer, a German–American academic, literary scholar, poet, and educator, died on April 2, 2026.
He was 96. Born in Munich, Germany, on August 4, 1929, he emigrated to the United States with his family in 1936.
Neumeyer earned degrees from the University of California, Berkeley, and began his academic career at Harvard University, where he taught until 1969 and created one of the first literary courses on children’s books in North America. He later taught at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and West Virginia University, and lectured in Sweden and Finland. His scholarship included work on E. B. White, Edward Gorey, and Franz Kafka.
