Anny Schlemm, the German opera singer, died on August 21, 2026, aged 97.

Born in Neu-Isenburg on February 22, 1929, she studied in Berlin with Erna Westenberger and made her stage debut in 1946 at the Halle Opera House as Nanette in Lortzing’s “Der Wildschütz.” She joined the Komische Oper Berlin in 1949 and remained there until 1961, later being named a lifelong Member of Honour. A soprano who later moved into mezzo-soprano roles, Schlemm appeared as Susanna, Marenka, Donna Elvira and other leading characters, and also sang as a guest at the Vienna State Opera, the Royal Opera House in London, the Glyndebourne Festival and the Paris Opéra.
