
Panayot Butchvarov, a Bulgarian philosopher, died on May 1, 2026, at the age of 93.
Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, on April 2, 1933, he was a Bulgarian-born American philosopher and Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at the University of Iowa. He left Syracuse University in 1968 as a full professor to join Iowa, where he later served as the University of Iowa Foundation Distinguished Professor of Philosophy before retiring in 2005.
He was president of the American Philosophical Association’s Central Division in 1992-93 and edited the Journal of Philosophical Research. Butchvarov wrote on metaphysics, epistemology, and ethics.
