Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, on April 2, 1933, he was a Bulgarian-born American philosopher whose work focused on metaphysics, epistemology and ethics. He joined the University of Iowa in 1968 after leaving Syracuse University as a full professor and retired in 2005.
Butchvarov also served as president of the American Philosophical Association’s Central Division in 1992-93 and edited the Journal of Philosophical Research.
