Nelson Wang, an Indian restaurateur and founder of China Garden in Mumbai’s Kemps Corner neighborhood, died on May 15, 2026, at the age of 75 or 76.
Born in Kolkata in 1950, Wang was of Chinese descent and is widely credited by various sources with inventing Chicken Manchurian, a popular Indian–Chinese dish. He moved to Mumbai in 1974 with ₹27, began working in a small restaurant in Colaba, and later said he had also taken odd jobs, including as a limbo dancer.
Wang has said he was working at the Cricket Club of India when, in 1975, a customer asked him to create a new dish.
