Born Michael John Smedley on October 28, 1941, in Maltby, he began his career with Yorkshire and played for the county’s Second XI from 1960 to 1962 before joining Nottinghamshire in 1963. He made his first-class debut the following year and established himself as a right-handed middle-order batsman.
Nottinghamshire awarded him his county cap in 1966, and his benefit season in 1975 raised £8,500. Smedley was appointed club captain that year and held the role for five seasons before retiring in 1979.
