Michael Lyster Sports broadcaster dead at age 71

Michael Lyster, the Irish television and radio broadcaster best known for presenting The Sunday Game Live, died on March 21, 2026, aged 71.

He worked for RTÉ and mainly covered sporting events, including Gaelic games and the Olympic Games. Born in Dungarvan, County Waterford, he spent his formative years in Barnaderg, County Galway, after his father was transferred there when he was four.

He was educated at St Jarlath’s College in Tuam and began his career in journalism with The Tuam Herald before moving into television and radio.

Michael Lyster (4 February 1954 – 21 March 2026) was an Irish radio and television broadcaster who worked for RTÉ. He mainly covered sporting events, such as Gaelic games and Olympic Games. He was best known for presenting The Sunday Game Live, which he hosted from 1984 to 2018.
