Maureen Jones, the Australian classical pianist, died on September 23, 2026, aged 99.
Born in Sydney on June 6, 1927, she was invited in primary school to study at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music by its director, Edgar Bainton, and made her debut with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra at age 99 playing Beethoven’s First Piano Concerto. She later studied with Alexander Hmelnitsky and went on to perform with Musica Viva, as well as with leading orchestras and ensembles in London, Zurich, Berlin, Venice, and on broadcasts and festivals including the Edinburgh International Festival, the BBC and the RAI.
In 1979, she co-founded Quintetto Fauré with violinist Pina Carmirelli, and later lived in Rome before moving to Florence to teach at the Fiesole School of Music.
