Margaret Chant-Papandreou, an American-born Greek women’s rights activist, writer and former first lady, died on September 18, 2026, aged 102.
Born Margaret Esther Chant in Oak Park, Illinois, she later became known in Greece as a feminist campaigner and author and was the former wife of former Greek prime minister Andreas Papandreou. She was the mother of George Papandreou, who also served as prime minister of Greece, as well as Nikos Papandreou, a member of the European Parliament.
Chant-Papandreou studied at the University of Minnesota and went on to serve as president of the Greek Women’s Union, an independent feminist organization, while also writing columns and books.
