Lucy López, the Chilean high jumper who won silver in the women’s high jump at the 1951 Pan American Games, died on July 27, 2026, aged 96.

López Cruz, born in Santiago on July 13, 1930, became the first Chilean woman to medal at the Pan American Games. She later graduated from the University of Chile in 1966 after studying to be a physical education teacher, then worked as a coach for schools and organizations and spent more than 20 years as a professor in the university’s athletics department.

López remained involved in sports administration late in life and was honored in 2023 when she helped light the cauldron at the Pan American Games in Santiago.
