Born in Shanghai in 1945 and originally from Zhongshan, he studied fine arts in Zhejiang, earning his degree there in 1965. He later studied at the Varbanov Institute for Textile Art at the Art Academy of Zhejiang, completing that course in 1986.
In 1988, he began cultivating silk worms, an interest tied to the rough silk that became central to his art. Shaoji also received the Prince Claus Award.
