Lou Yulie, a Chinese philosopher and professor of philosophy and religious studies at Peking University, died October 9, 2026, aged 91.

Born in Hangzhou on December 10, 1934, he attended Pujiang High School before studying at Peking University, where he later joined the faculty and built his academic career. His ancestral home was Shengzhou.

Lou was appointed lecturer in the university’s Department of Philosophy in June 1979, became associate professor in December 1980 and professor in September 1985. Over more than 50 years, his academic work addressed the history of Chinese philosophy, Chinese Buddhism and Buddhist philosophy. His research was particularly associated with metaphysics of the Wei and Jin period, from AD 220 to 420, as well as modern Chinese philosophy. He was also known for promoting Chinese culture. At Peking University, Lou served as honorary dean of the Institutes of Religion and Culture and was founding director of the Institute of Chinese Buddhist Cultural Studies. His work and university roles spanned the study of Chinese philosophical history and Buddhist thought, while his teaching and research remained based at the institution where he had studied. He was also identified as a writer.
