Born in London on November 29, 1943, he studied at London University and played club hockey for London Hospitals before moving on to Tulse Hill Hockey Club in South London. Though he had played for England schoolboys in 1961, Lawson chose to represent Scotland at international level and was one of four Scots in Great Britain’s men’s hockey team at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.
