The case stemmed from the July 13, 2002, killing of 21-year-old Charles Perez in Phoenix, Arizona, when Leroy McGill doused him with a gasoline-and-styrofoam mixture and burned him alive. McGill also attempted to kill Perez’s girlfriend, Nova Banta, in the same attack.
