Born in Jackson, Tennessee, on October 4, 1946, he debuted in 1974 with the Tennessee-based NWA Mid-America promotion. Hickerson became best known for his tag team work, first with Al Greene as the Sherman Tanks, with whom he won the NWA Southern Tag Team Championship three times in 1974.

He later teamed with Dennis Condrey as the Bicentennial Kings, winning the NWA World Six-Man Tag Team Championship in 1975 and multiple Southern Tag Team titles between 1976 and 1978.
