Lawrence J.
Smith, an American politician and former member of the U.S. House of Representatives, died on May 6, 2026, in Hollywood, Florida, at the age of 85.
A Florida Democrat, he served in the House from 1983 to 1993 after previously serving in the Florida House of Representatives from 1978 to 1982. Smith was born in New York City on April 25, 1941. He attended public schools in East Meadow, New York, studied at New York University from 1958 to 1961, and earned a Bachelor of Laws from Brooklyn Law School in 1964. He was admitted to the New York bar that year, later admitted to the Florida bar in 1972, and practiced law in New York City before serving as chairman of the Hollywood commission from 1974 to 1978.
