Born in Düsseldorf in 1929, he was a German philosopher and social theorist associated with critical theory and pragmatism. His work addressed communicative rationality and the public sphere, and he focused on epistemology, social theory, advanced capitalism, democracy, the rule of law, and contemporary politics, particularly German politics.

Habermas held professorships at Heidelberg University and Goethe University Frankfurt and directed the Max Planck Institute in Starnberg.
