Born in Melbourne on July 14, 1948, Joseph Gerard Santamaria KC served as a judge of the Court of Appeal of the Supreme Court of Victoria after joining the court in August 2013. He retired in July 2018 and later remained connected to Melbourne Law School as a Senior Fellow in the Juris Doctor programme.

Santamaria studied at St Patrick’s College, East Melbourne, the University of Melbourne and University College, Oxford, and was admitted to legal practice in 1973. He practised in commercial law and equity, taught at Melbourne Law School from 1977, was called to the Victorian Bar in 1978 and appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1994.
