Born Jane Hyatt Yolen in New York City on February 11, 1939, she wrote fantasy, science fiction and children’s books and was credited as an author or editor of more than 400 titles. Among her better-known works were the Holocaust novella The Devil’s Arithmetic, the Nebula Award-winning short works “Sister Emily’s Lightship” and “Lost Girls,” and the children’s books Owl Moon and The Emperor and the Kite.

Her output also included the Commander Toad series. Yolen published her 400th book, Bear Outside, in early 2021.
