Born in Kelvington, Saskatchewan, Melrose played professionally in the World Hockey Association and the National Hockey League before turning to coaching and broadcasting. He went on to lead the Los Angeles Kings as head coach during their run to the 1993 Stanley Cup Final and later became a long-serving hockey analyst for ESPN and a contributor to the NHL Network.
