Born Ranee Kathryn Gupta in Detroit on January 28, 1957, she studied at Princeton University and earned her Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1981.

After a postdoctoral fellowship at MIT, she joined Brown University in 1982 as Tamarkin Assistant Professor of Mathematics and later moved to Pennsylvania State University, where she served as co-director of the Center for Geometry and Mathematical Physics. In 2003, she left academia to cofound Brylinski Research with her husband, Jean-Luc Brylinski.
