Also known as Iskhak Shumafovich Mashbash and anglicised as Isaac Mashbash, he was a Circassian poet, writer and translator whose work helped shape Adyghe literature. Born in the Uspensky District, he studied at the Maxim Gorky Literature Institute and went on to author more than 80 books in Adyghe.
He also translated numerous works from Russian into Adyghe and Kabardian, including the Quran, and his writings appeared in several languages, among them English, French, Spanish, German, Polish, Mongolian, Turkish and Arabic. In 2015, his works were issued in a 20-volume edition in Adyghe and Russian. Over his career, he received major honors including the USSR State Prize and the Hero of Labour of the Russian Federation.
