Born in Fremantle on July 16, 1934, she studied at the University of Melbourne before receiving formal archaeological training at the University of Cambridge. In 1960, she joined the Australian National University and later held emeritus professor and School Fellow positions there.
McBryde was widely regarded as a major figure in her field, training at least three generations of Australian archaeologists and earning the affectionate title “Mother of Australian Archaeology.” Her work also contributed to the preservation and protection of Australian cultural heritage, particularly Aboriginal cultural heritage.
