Edward Knox, the American politician who served as mayor of Charlotte, North Carolina, died on June 22, 2026, at age 89. Born Haden Edward Knox on January 22, 1937, he was a native of Davidson, North Carolina and a graduate of North Carolina State University and Wake Forest University School of Law.
Knox served two terms in the North Carolina Senate from 1971 to 1974, helped chair Jim Hunt’s successful 1976 gubernatorial campaign and then won election as Charlotte’s 49th mayor, serving from 1979 to 1983. He later ran unsuccessfully for governor in 1984.
