Born Clive Jay Davis in Brooklyn on April 4, 1932, he built a long career in the music industry as a record producer, record executive and lawyer. He served as president of Columbia Records from 1967 to 1973, then led Arista Records from 1974 until 2000 before founding J Records.

Davis later held senior posts at RCA Music Group, J Records and BMG North America. He won five Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000 as a non-performer.
