He was 87. Born in Budapest in 1938, Berzsenyi emigrated to the United States in 1957 after the Hungarian Revolution of 1956.
He earned a doctorate in mathematics from Texas Christian University in 1969, with specialization in complex analysis, and later taught at Lamar University for 19 years before joining the Rose–Hulman Institute of Technology, where he remained for 12 years until his retirement in 1999. Berzsenyi chaired the American Invitational Mathematics Examination, co-founded the United States of America Mathematical Talent Search, and helped develop several problem-solving programs.
