He was an emeritus professor of psychology at the University of Connecticut and a senior scientist at Haskins Laboratories in New Haven, Connecticut, where he also served on the board of directors. A linguist as well as a psychologist, Shankweiler was known for pioneering research into how language is represented and processed in the brain, with work spanning speech perception, reading, and the cognitive neuroscience of language.
His research also examined reading and writing acquisition and disorders of spoken and written language.
