Richard “Doc” Sauers, an American basketball coach who led the Albany Great Danes, died on April 27, 2026.

He was 96. Sauers coached the Albany men’s basketball team from 1955 to 1997, except for the 1987-88 season, a span of 41 years.

He compiled 702 victories, placing him among the top 40 winningest coaches in NCAA history. He came to what was then New York State College for Teachers at Albany in 1955 and remained through its transition to the University at Albany. His teams made 11 NCAA and four NAIA postseason tournament appearances.
