Simmons co-founded the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation with his brothers, Russell and Joseph Simmons, and served as chairman of the group, which focused on arts access and education for disadvantaged urban youth. He also founded Rush Arts Philadelphia and the RAP Gallery II arts education space, and helped establish Def Poetry Jam with Russell Simmons for HBO. In 2004, he published the novel Three Days As the Crow Flies, set in the 1980s New York art scene.
