Born Carmen Zita Aldunate Salas in Viña del Mar in 1940, she became associated with the profile-based, pre-Renaissance-inspired strand of illustration known as “ilustratismo perfilista prerrenacentista” and with Latin American neo-figurative art. She studied at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile and the University of Chile before continuing her training at the University of California, Davis.
Her work placed the human figure at the center, often drawing on women’s faces to build psychologically charged images marked by feminist commentary, irony, and humor.
