More about Manuel Donoso
Manuel Gerardo Donoso Donoso, a Chilean Roman Catholic prelate who served as auxiliary bishop and later archbishop of La Serena, died October 29, 2026, aged 90.
Born in Santiago on October 16, 1936, he completed his humanities studies at the Colegio de los Sagrados Corazones in the city and studied law for several years at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. He later entered the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, making his perpetual profession in 1958.
At the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, he studied theology and earned a licentiate in the subject, then specialized in moral theology at the Institut Catholique de Paris. Donoso became an auxiliary bishop of La Serena in 1996. The following year, he was appointed archbishop of the same archdiocese, a position he held until his retirement in 2013. His episcopal service in La Serena thus extended across both roles, first as an auxiliary bishop and then as the archdiocese’s leader. His formation combined humanities and university studies in Santiago with theological training in Chile and France before he took up those senior church appointments.
