Chilean journalist Juan Pablo Cárdenas Squella died of cancer on October 11, 2026, aged 76.

Born in Santiago on December 1, 1949, he attended the German Lyceum of Santiago and Barros Arana National Boarding School before studying journalism at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. His thesis was titled “The Press and the Peasant Reality.” While a student, he began working for Debate Universitario, the university’s magazine, and later became its director, leaving the position in 1973.

In 1992, he founded Los Tiempos, a magazine he directed until 1993. From 1994, he served as press attaché at Chile’s embassy in Mexico, holding the post until around 2000. In September 2000, he became director of Primera Línea, an electronic newspaper managed by La Nación. He accepted the position on the condition that he could practice critical and independent journalism. Cárdenas was also an academic, alongside his work in journalism. His work defending press freedom earned him the International Press Institute’s World Press Freedom Heroes award and Chile’s National Prize of Journalism.
