D. Gopinath, the Indian test cricketer who represented Madras and the national team, died on April 9, 2026, at the age of 96.
Born in Madras on March 1, 1930, he graduated from Madras Christian College and was a right-handed batsman. He made a notable Test debut against England in 1951–52, scoring 50 not out and 42 while batting at No. 8 in both innings. He also contributed 35 in the final Test of that series, when India recorded its first Test victory. Gopinath later toured England in 1952 and played additional Tests against Pakistan and Australia.
